As we celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day Cloudburst reflects on a vital aspect of his legacy: his relentless pursuit of fair housing. Dr. King famously said, “I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal.'” These words resonate profoundly in the world of fair housing and the everyday lives of Americans.
Dr. King’s work in fair housing, particularly during the Chicago Freedom Movement, set the stage for monumental changes in housing policies across the United States. Dr. King’s legacy and the history of fair housing and the Fair Housing Act of 1968 are foundational training elements that Cloudburst supports through HUD’s National Fair Housing Training Academy.
Cloudburst honors the legacy of Dr. King in this work by training the fair housing professionals of today and tomorrow to protect the most vulnerable, identify and address housing discrimination and segregation, ensure equitable disaster recovery, expand access to housing for the homeless, and much more. On this day and in the spirit of Martin Luther King, Jr., Cloudburst acknowledges the importance of ensuring fair housing for all.
